Review

I really like the Kick-Ass films so I checked out the source material. The first Kick-Ass comic series consists of four volumes and follows Dave Lizewski, aka Kick-Ass, a teenager comic nerd who tries (and often fails) to become a real life superhero. Dave gets caught up with the ruthless vigilantes Big Daddy and Hit-Girl, and their mission to take down the Genovese crime family.

As with the films, the story is fun but brutal. The comic reads like a deliberately ugly deconstruction of the superhero genre, much like The Boys, albeit with more adolescent humour. The violence in the comics dwarfs that of the films which is to be expected. Dave makes for a somewhat unlikeable character who constantly puts his dad and Katie in danger by being incompetent but his character development, especially with regards understanding consequences, is well executed.

Conclusion

A bit too teenage edgelord but some funny jokes.
