I have been a selfish being all my life, in practice, though not in principle.
I recently revisited this iconic novel through Noiser's production narrated by Julie Andrews. The story follows Elizabeth, one of five Bennet sisters from a socially respectable landed gentry family. The story details follows the sisters as they try to navigate marriage, money, and class in Regency-era England.
Much like Anne of Green Gables, I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. I'm not the target demographic and I also typically find stories fixated on relationships between characters dry. I was pleasantly surprised at just how much I enjoyed this novel. The characters are well written, especially the independent Elizabeth and her (and Austen's) razor sharp wit. The humour also holds up particularly well even today, such as the awkward social situations with Mr. Collins and the sardonic remarks of Mr. Bennet. Of course, the romance is quite timeless and well-executed.
Another pleasant surprise of the book is learning about the societal customs and norms of the era featured throughout the story.
I can see why this novel is so beloved.
