The law was not about truth. It was about negotiation, amelioration, manipulation. I didn’t deal in guilt and innocence, because everybody was guilty. Of something.
The story is narrated by Mickey Haller, a criminal defense lawyer who operates often in the grey areas of legality. Haller is recommended to a wealthy franchise client (a client who can afford to pay whatever fee Haller charges) who is accused of attacking a woman. Haller quickly finds out that there is more than meets the eye in his client’s case.
Both the writing and the story are very engaging. The first-person narration aids in developing Mickey’s character, from someone wholly cynical and self-centered to someone who cares about the pursuit of truth (and still cynical and self-centered). Connelly has done excellent research into the American legal system and it shows in his writing. The story is filled with unpredictable twists and turns and has a very satisfying ending.
A solid legal thriller.
