Review

Wool is actually a collection of a short story and four novellas. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic Earth where humans live in the Silo, a subterranean city with over 100 floors that is self-sustaining and has its own culture and customs. The story follows various characters but is mainly from the perspective of Juliette, a mechanic who gets caught in a political struggle between various factions within the Silo.

The premise of living underground due to an apocalyptic event has been explored in many stories, my favourite being the Fallout franchise due to its black humour and macabre lore. The lore of Wool also feels post-apocalyptic and dark, but lacks the humour of Fallout. Despite this, Wool was still an interesting read, especially the first short story which really drew me in with its mystery. Unfortunately the rest of the novellas lacked the same intrigue as the first story and felt a tad slow at times. Howey also writes in a very verbose manner that lacks nuance. It is interesting that this book is one of the most successful from the self-publishing trend, though.

Conclusion

A somewhat interesting story but it loses the mystery factor too quickly.
