Review

Plane rides are perhaps the best places to watch horror movies, as the small screen and the poor acoustics take away much of the fear factor. On my flight back from NYC to SF, I finally watched this movie that has been on my backlog for ages.

The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that has been ravaged by mysterious creatures who are blind but very sensitive to noise. The creatures hunt and kill humans and are resistant to weaponry. The plot follows Lee (John Krasinski) and Evelyn (Emily Blunt), two parents trying to protect their children Regan (Millicent Simmonds), Marcus (Noah Jupe), and Beau (Cade Woodward).

The premise of the story is very exciting but I kept finding plot holes throughout the movie (why don’t they wear sneakers or soundproof their homes?). The characters are very well-written, such as Regan who is deaf. In a film with very little dialogue, a character must be portrayed solely through body language and facial expressions. Krasinski’s troubled Lee is excellent but Blunt’s desperate Evelyn is phenomenal and plays a very expressive horror movie heroine. The theme of parenthood and caring for their children is very well-executed. Simmonds’ headstrong Regan and Jupe’s terrified Marcus are decent as well. The film also plays with sound, such as being silent during Regan’s scenes, which I liked.

Conclusion

Engaging premise and well-written characters but too many plot holes.
