Booyakasha!
Ali G (Sacha Baron Cohen) is a satirical caricature of a suburban chav. In the movie, Ali G is swept up in a political plot to overthrow the Prime Minister of Great Britain (Michael Gambon).
Sacha Baron Cohen is one of my favourite comedians and Ali G is his first breakout role; originally from a TV series, Cohen has taken the character to the big screen. Ali G is crass, ignorant, but also slightly endearing. Cohen does an excellent job portraying the poseur, including the body language as well as the speech. The film has a surprising amount of star power behind it, including featuring serious actors such as Charles Dance, and even cameos from the likes of Naomi Campbell. The most surprising role is perhaps a young Martin Freeman as Ricky C, Ali G’s trusty sidekick. I love how the cast doesn’t take themselves and their characters too seriously.
The humour is immature and offensive, with a good mix of slapstick and toilet humour. I hate to admit it but I found some of the jokes to be terribly funny. It’s an extremely stupid film, but it’s riotously hilarious.
A stupidly hilarious film with great comedic characters.
