Alas... how terrible is wisdom when it brings no profit to the wise, Johnny?
In this supernatural thriller taking place in 1955, private investigator Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) is contracted by the mysterious Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro) to track down a crooner known as Johnny Favorite who owes Cyphre a debt. Angel's investigation quickly goes off the rails as he's embroiled in several murders.
The premise is interesting but the plot is pretty predictable. The film is filled with detailed symbolisms, such as a spinning fan and the lady shrouded in black. The performances are amazing all around; Rourke’s hardboiled and unscrupulous Angel is probably one of his best roles ever. The supporting cast, which includes De Niro’s sinister Cyphre, Lisa Bonet’s youthful Epiphany Proudfoot, and Charlotte Rampling’s cryptic Margaret Krusemark, are all solid in their own ways as well. My favourite aspect of the film is its atmosphere, which ranges from the bustling streets of New York City to the sweltering heat of New Orleans. The cinematography is very sophisticated and Trevor Jones’ score, which features R&B and blues influences, is very tasteful.
The devil is truly in the details.
