Review

Never in a hundred years would I have expected Jack Nicholson to star as the male lead in a romcom but here we are. Nicholson plays Melvin, a misanthropic author of romance novels who has severe OCD and probably some autism.

Nicholson is brilliant as an offensive, rude, and often funny recluse who avoids human contact like the plague. Both Greg Kinnear’s Simon and Helen Hunt’s Carol serve as excellent foils for Nicholson’s character. Nicholson’s Melvin has one of my favourite character development arcs in a romcom history. This film is definitely a feel-good movie, but unlike some other films in the genre, there’s a bit more substance and a bit more nuance in its themes and characters. It feels much more mature but still keeps the charm.

Conclusion

A charming romcom with Nicholson as the male lead.
