Review

In this stylish action thriller, Ansel Elgort plays Baby, a wheelman getaway driver for groups of robbers in Atlanta. After being coerced by a crime boss (Kevin Spacey) to participate in a doomed heist, Baby has to use all of his skills to make it out alive.

This film has one of the strongest directorial directions I’ve seen in modern cinema. Music plays an important part in the film and is utilized very well, oftentimes complimenting what is happening during the scenes. At times the film feels like a musical.

The character designs are amazing; I particularly enjoy Jamie Foxx’s malevolent Bats and Jon Hamm and Eiza González’s Bonnie and Clyde characters, Buddy and Darling. The characters feel nuanced, such as Spacey’s Doc, who while being a villain, is also a mentor to Baby, much like Mahershala Ali’s Juan in Moonlight (although not as good, of course). Both the dialogue and the cinematography are snappy and engaging. Elgort’s Baby is corny at times but he plays the character well. Lily James’ Debora is a decent female lead.

Conclusion

The strong directorial direction pays off.
