You've always been there for Robbie Williams, dad. Why couldn't you just be there for Robert?

Review

Watching a musical film of British pop star Robbie Williams as a CGI monkey (Jonno Davies) certainly wasn't in my schedule but I like to watch quirky movies on planes so I checked it out. The story follows the ups and downs during life and career of Robbie Williams, such as his father walking out on his family to pursue fame and him joining the boy group Take That.

If one thinks that just because the protagonist is a monkey that the film would be lighthearted, one would be gravely mistaken. The story is very raw and explores many darker aspects of Robbie's life, such as his constant struggles with mental illness and various addictions. While Robbie Williams' achieved stardom, one can't but help view his journey as one full of hardships and tragedy, but also of resilience. I actually really liked the monkey symbolism in the context of entertainment, and while the pacing is a tad slower at parts, I quite enjoyed Robbie Williams' songs being interwoven into his story.

Conclusion

A refreshing take on biographical films.
