It’s a strange world, isn’t it?

Review

In this sexually charged thriller, two young adults, Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) and Sandy Williams (Laura Dern), investigate a severed human ear that Jeffrey found in a vacant lot. Jeffrey quickly gets embroiled in a complex plot involving Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini), a mysterious lounge singer.

What immediately stood out is how dreamy the cinematography is; the slow zooms and the unsettling imagery creates a surreal atmosphere. The story is extreme and is reminiscent of a Stephen King coming-of-age story. MacLachlan’s curious and voyeuristic Jeffrey is decent if not a tad bland. Dern’s innocent Sandy contrasts greatly with the macabre plot while Rossellini’s sultry and troubled Dorothy is very entertaining. My favourite cast member is by far Dennis Hopper, whose Frank Booth is perhaps one of the most unhinged and deranged villains in cinema history.

Conclusion

The song is now stuck in my head.
