Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
Based on the real-life story of a basketball coach who suspended his undefeated team due to poor academic performance, Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) takes over coaching a high school basketball team in a rough neighbourhood in Richmond, California. Carter implements a strict and disciplined regime in hopes of improving the lives of the players on his team.
I’m a big fan of all of Jackson’s roles and this one is no exception. Jackson brings his swagger and intensity, which serves as foil for the rest of the team, which includes Rick Gonzalez’s rebellious Timo Cruz. Other prominent team members include Robert Ri'chard’s Damien Carter, Antwon Tanner’s Worm, Rob Brown’s Kenyon Stone, Nana Gbewonyo’s Junior Battle, and Channing Tatum’s Jason Lyle. Other than Jackson and perhaps Gonzalez, no one else really stood out. The film delivers a very positive message on the importance of education and the inspirational tone of the film is an excellent vehicle for delivery. There are some corny scenes which have aged poorly, such as the bad slow motion basketball shots and the overly emotional montages.
A high school basketball classic.
