Review

The second movie based on the Ming dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods written in the 16th century, this film continues the epic conflict between the Shang dynasty and the rebels. Yin Shou (Fei Xiang) commands Deng Chanyu (Nashi), a general of the Shang army, to attack Xiqi, a rebel city under the command of Ji Fa (Yu Shi).

The story definitely embellishes the source material but it's entertaining for the modern audience. The plot is a tad convoluted and also feels like the filmmakers wanted to fit as much tropes in as possible. Despite this, it's a highly ambitious film that builds on the first. The CGI is still a hit or miss, especially with the giants. The high fantasy aesthetics and setting are still very well-done, and the character designs are very cool, such as the epic Wen Zhong (Wu Hsing-kuo).

Conclusion

Still ambitious, but more curation would've been nice.
