When dealing with aliens, try to be polite, but firm. And always remember that a smile is cheaper than a bullet.

Review

I have a soft spot for science fiction and mock documentaries and this film is both. This mock documentary follows a fictional history where an alien star ship arrives on Earth carrying aliens, the seemingly primitive “Prawns”. The Prawns settle into a ghetto in Johannesburg named District 9. The film follows Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley), an employee of weapons manufacturer Multinational United (MNU), who is tasked with relocating the Prawns from District 9. The relocation quickly goes awry and Wikus finds himself on the run from MNU.

The story covers many themes, namely that of segregation and xenophobia, as District 9 is loosely based on the real-life segregation area of District Six in Cape Town. The tone felt both tragic and comedic at the same time. While the world of District 9 is undoubtedly dystopian and Kafkaesque, but aspects of the world, such as the Prawns’ fondness for cat food, are very funny. The film is fast-paced and features many exciting scenes filled with action and visual effect goodness.

Conclusion

A deep comedy with a tragic undertone.
