I have doubts... I have such doubts!
The film takes place in 1960s Bronx, when the principal of a Catholic elementary school, the stern Sister Aloysius (Meryl Streep), notices signs of an inappropriate relationship between Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the priest of the parish, and Donald (Joseph Foster), an altar boy.
The story is thought-provoking and merciless in its exploration of morality and faith. It explored many interesting topics like the role of gender in Catholicism and the circumstances of moral conviction. Streep's Aloysius is fierce and precise, while Hoffman's Flynn is warm and sympathetic. The supporting cast, which includes the foil character Sister James (Amy Adams) and the desperate Mrs. Miller (Viola Davis), were fantastic in drawing out more of Streep's Aloysius.
A slow movie with some very strong performances.
