There's a hundred-thousand streets in this city. You don't need to know the route. You give me a time and a place, I give you a five minute window. Anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours. No matter what. Anything happens a minute either side of that and you're on your own. Do you understand?
Ryan Gosling plays a loner Hollywood stunt driver who works as a getaway driver in his spare time. The driver grows fond of his neighbour Irene (Carey Mulligan) and decides to help her husband (Oscar Isaac) rob a pawn shop to pay back his debts.
Gosling is amazing as the archetypal silent but deadly antihero. While Gosling’s character has a tough exterior through his physical performance, Gosling still relays a sense of vulnerability through his emotional performance. The duality of the character really makes his character endearing to the audience and gives his story an almost Of Mice and Men feel. Gosling’s character design is also very cool, with his jacket that gradually gets more and more dirty.
The neo-noir quality of the film is very stylish and I like the film’s engaging pacing. The violence is tasteful and compliments the pace of the film. The supporting cast, which includes Bryan Cranston’s Shannon, Albert Brooks’ Bernie, and Ron Perlman’s Nino, are all fantastic as well.
A very cool and suave crime thriller.
