In this French-Canadian crime drama based on a real story, Éric Bruneau plays Donald Lavoie, a hitman for the Dubois Gang in the late 1970s. After a botched murder, Lavoie comes under pressure from Detective Patrick Burns (Sylvain Marcel) to testify against his boss and at the same time, Lavoie’s boss Claude Dubois (Benoît Gouin) demands Lavoie to perform a difficult task to prove Lavoie's loyalty.
I would’ve never watched this movie had I not been on a flight. As with many Canadians, I tend to look down upon the (typically) heavily government-subsidized and low-budget Canadian entertainment. I find that Canadian entertainment is rarely original and almost always too politically correct at the detriment of the entertainment value. This indie film, however, actually has some decent selling points. Despite the clichéd plot and the lower production value, Bruneau’s visceral Lavoie, the awesome retro character outfits, and the dialogue steeped in the slang of Montréal (one of my favourite cities in Canada) kept me engaged. If you’re looking for an action-packed thriller then this film probably won’t deliver but if you’re looking for a character-driven crime drama then this film might scratch your itch.
Decent crime drama with some good performances.
