Previous Sergio Leone film review:
The second film in the Dollars trilogy sees the return of Clint Eastwood as a roguish cowboy. This time he's joined by Lee Van Cleef who plays an older roguish cowboy. The two team up to go after the ruthless outlaw gang led by El Indio (Gian Maria Volonté), who had just broken out of prison.
This film features basically the same cast as the first film but in a completely new story. Eastwood is still fantastic as the nonchalant antihero character and he's joined by Van Cleef who plays an older nonchalant bounty hunter seeking vengeance. Volonté's Indio plays a menacing villain with a dark past. This film feels like Leone is really hitting his stride. The storytelling is mostly tight and filled with long stretches of tension but does slow down in parts of the film. Leone also refines his characteristic style, such as extreme close-ups, wide sparse landscapes, and well-choreographed showdowns. Ennio Morricone's score is legendary as always and I like how it intertwines with the plot through the music pocket watch.
Sergio Leone really coming into his own.
