Review

I am extremely late to the party on this one, but I finally watched the documentary on the disastrous Fyre Festival hosted at The Bahamas by con artist Billy McFarland and the rapper Ja Rule. The festival is promoted by many high profile models and influencers and billed as an ultra-luxury music retreat. Of course, the festival failed dramatically as musical acts pulled out and attendees were left living in tents on terrible food rations.

The film first explores the past failed ventures of McFarland before diving deep into the chronology of Fyre Festival. The documentary interviews the various people involved in organizing the festival and the people who are victims of the festival, such as the caterers and the concertgoers (although some victims, such as this guy did not garner much sympathy). After watching this documentary, I can see how this disaster became such a meme. From its inception, the festival is mired with setbacks, largely caused by incompetence and overconfidence. Watching the film is like watching a slow trainwreck.

There are some important lessons in between the memes and ridiculous events, such as budgeting properly, controlling expectations (not lying), and listening to people who have experience in a certain field.

Conclusion

An interesting analysis of a failed project.
