Review

I wanted to watch Gladiator II on my flight so decided to rewatch the first film. The story follows Maximus (Russell Crowe), a favoured Roman general of emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). Aurelius' corrupt son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) assassinates Aurelius and condemns Maximus and his family to death. Enslaved as a gladiator, Maximus seeks revenge.

The story is a classic revenge tale and is well-executed with intense and expertly choreographed fight scenes and Hans Zimmer's soaring score. Crowe's stoic Maximus has much depth and gravity while Phoenix's Commodus makes for an excellent foil and villain. Other than the gladiatorial fights, my favourite aspect of the film is the grand sets and practical effects which evoke the glory of Rome's golden age.

Conclusion

An epic Roman tale of revenge.
