Review

Perhaps one of John Woo’s most iconic works, Hard Boiled follows HK Police Inspector “Tequila” Yuen (Chow Yun-Fat) as he tries to break down a Triad gun smuggling operation and avenge the death of his partner (Bowie Lam). The film features HK film legends such as Anthony Wong chau-sang and Tony Leung Chiu-wai.

The story is corny but it’s designed to be so. There are constant plot twists and betrayals. To be honest the plot felt like it was written with the action sequences in mind. The choreography is excellent as it features martial arts legends such as Philip Kwok. The gun fights are very stylized with slow motion dives and over the top special effects. The soundtrack and the costumes convey a sense of nostalgia for Hong Kong in the 80s.

Conclusion

An over the top film with a corny plot and too many special effects, but very entertaining to watch.
