Review

This is a documentary about Dan Harmon, the writer and creator behind hit comedy shows such as Community and Rick and Morty. It’s a very intimate look both at his professional life, centering around his unconventional live shows across the United States, where he does things like play Dungeons & Dragons with his friends in front of an audience.

I felt the documentary was very raw. It showed the positive influence Harmon has on nerds and geek culture; the content he creates resonates with his audience and his comfort in being his authentic self attracts like-minded people such as his audience-turned-friend Spencer Crittenden. The film also shows Harmon’s dark side such as his tendency to act like a self-described “dick”, especially towards those he is close with, such as his then girlfriend Erin McGathy.

The film is structured much like Harmon’s podcasts and shows, with no prior planning and no fixed structure. It showed everything from Harmon talking about his earlier failures and self-doubt, such as the 1999 failed pilot of Heat Vision and Jack, to various interactions between the Harmon crew and the audience at their live shows. Somehow, the seemingly lack of planning and structure make the documentary seem more authentic, almost like a home video.

Conclusion

An interesting look at a self-loathing comedy writer.
