I bet he's really frightened now... what are you gonna do about it?

Ehhh... probably something stupid.

Review

Based on the children’s book series by Cressida Cowell, the film takes place in the fictional village of Berk, where the Viking villagers constantly face the threat of dragons. The book follows Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), a young Viking trying to prove himself to his chieftain father Stoick (Gerard Butler) and his fellow villagers. Unfortunately, Hiccup is physically weak and clumsy; one chance encounter changes Hiccuop’s life.

This film has all the hallmarks of a generic 3D animated film, such as the typical story and themes. Despite this, the film feels special. Many of my (female) friends claim HTTYD as their favourite film and I can see why. The story is a classic coming-of-age tale, but it’s written in a very tasteful and non-corny way. The script is impactful and not overly dragged out.

The voice acting is great but not too dramatic, and I particularly enjoyed the juxtaposition of Baruchel’s high-pitched Hiccup and Butler’s austere Stoick. The supporting cast features big names such as America Ferrera, Craig Ferguson, and Jonah Hill. The film has a decent sense of humour, and features comedic cast members such as Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, and Kristen Wiig. The film also looks amazing visually, especially the animation of the dragons and the action sequences.

Conclusion

A fun movie about dragons and growing up.
