A good cop can't sleep because he's missing a piece of the puzzle. And a bad cop can't sleep because his conscience won't let him.
Past Christopher Nolan film reviews:
In the American remake of a Norwegian film of the same name, Al Pacino plays Will Dormer, a storied LAPD detective sent to Nightmute, a remote Alaskan town. Dormer, along with his partner Hap Eckhart (Martin Donovan) and a local detective Ellie Bur (Hilary Swank), are tasked with investigating the murder of a teenage girl. After the killer of the girl witnesses Dormer accidentally shooting Eckhart in the pursuit, the killer and Dormer create a plan to both get away with murder.
I watched this film because I’m a fan of Christopher Nolan’s works and unlike his newer films, which have breathtaking cinematography, this film feels a bit more grounded on story and acting. To that extent Pacino really delivers. His cynical and insomniac Dormer is phenomenal and the character development is really well flushed out. His supporting cast, which includes Swank and Robin Williams, are amazing as well and act as great foils to Pacino’s Dormer. The pacing of the film is slow like molasses but it really emphasized the endless insomnia suffered by Dormer. There were some interesting themes but the theme of guilt really dominated the narrative.
The pacing is excrutiatingly slow but Pacino is phenomenal.
