You think I’m a hero? I am not a hero. I’m a drifter with nothing to lose.

Review

Based on the Lee Childs character from the novel series, Tom Cruise plays the titular character Jack Reacher, who is a drifter and ex-US Army Military Police Corps investigator. Reacher is called in to investigate when a man shoots and kills five people with a sniper rifle in Pittsburg.

The film harkens back to action thrillers of the days past, where there were no over-the-top action sequences nor any strong social messages or morals. The story is just a straightforward mystery thriller where Reacher and his sidekick, the defense attorney Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike) try to uncover the truth behind the shootings. As with all Cruise films, the dialogue is corny but Cruise brings his usual intensity and confidence. Pike’s role feels wasted as she’s largely unmemorable. I did like the villains and Joseph Sikora’s Barr, though.

Conclusion

A very straightforward action thriller.
