Nothing makes sense anymore.

Yeah, I know, definitely not a good time to be a Nazi.

Review

This film takes place in World War II and follows Jojo Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis) an ardent Hitler Youth member who finds out that his single mother Rosie (Scarlett Johansson) has been hiding Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie), a Jewish girl, in the attic of their house.

The film is so interesting because it’s a gut-wrenching comedy from the perspective of a young boy; while it’s dark due to the environment and subject matter, it retains the playfulness of a young perspective. There were so many interesting and fun characters, from Jojo’s imaginary friend Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi), to Jojo’s mentor Captain Klenzendorf (Sam Rockwell), to Jojo’s friend Yorki (Archie Yates). The script is well-written and the jokes are funny. The acting is also phenomenal, especially for the younger cast members; while Jojo Rabbit is certainly a hilarious comedy, it also hides a touching drama.

The cinematography is very lively and adds to the comedic aspect of the film; there were also some very beautiful shots with plenty of pastel colours and from interesting angles. The costume and set design are also very colourful and engaging; I especially love the subtle details, such as Captain K's costumes.

Conclusion

A beautiful and human take on a dark time in history.
