Review

Four classmates, Spencer (Alex Wolff), Fridge (Ser'Darius Blain), Bethany (Madison Iseman), and Martha (Morgan Turner), are transported into the fantastical and dangerous world of Jumanji. The four, now assuming the roles of Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Mouse (Kevin Hart), Shelly Oberon (Jack Black), and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), must complete a daring quest in order to return to their own world.

I’ve never seen the first Jumanji but I have read the children’s book that inspired the first film. This film is certainly an unexpected reboot but I do like how the writers modernized the settings, such as making the Jumanji more akin to a video game than a board game. This movie, being a blockbuster made for a wide audience, has a large budget but also a very superficial script. The dialogue feels like it’s catering to a younger audience but there are some jokes targetted towards adults. Overall, much of the humour relies on slapstick puns and the fact that the teens aren’t used to their characters bodies within the game. The acting can get pretty corny due to the script but I did like the chemistry between Johnson’s Bravestone and Hart’s Mouse.

Conclusion

An entertaining reboot with a very superficial story.
