Review

I personally found Will Smith’s behaviour at the Oscars abhorrent and classless, but I’m also a big fan of Serena and Venus Williams so I ended up watching this film. The story follows the childhoods of Serena and Venus, but focuses on their father, Richard Williams. For me, Richard is a conflicting figure, because on one hand, he was a domineering father figure that ran out on his first family, but on the other hand he was instrumental to the success of the Williams sisters.

Will Smith is actually a very solid person for the role of Richard because Smith nails the desperate parent act, where he hides his traumas and obstacles away from his children, such as in The Pursuit of Happyness. The supporting cast, which includes Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor’s Brandy, Saniyya Sidney’s Venus, and Demi Singleton’s Serena, are fantastic. I also liked Jon Bernthal’s Rick Macci. Overall the film is solid, but definitely very typical, like a generic underdog sports story.

Conclusion

A well-made movie that's good but didn't blow me away.
