Review

In this very Chinese comedy about Chunyun, the period during Spring Festival where everyone is trying to travel home, two very different characters try to make their way to Changsha. One of the characters is Li Chenggong (Xu Zheng), a successful business man traveling home to see his family; the other character is Niu Geng (Wang Baoqiang), a migrant worker traveling to collect his defaulted wages.

The film plays on the foil between the two characters; Chenggoing is wealthy and cold while Niu Geng is naive and warm. The characters are definitely very archetypal (Chenggong literally means successful in Mandarin) but both actors nail their archetype; the banter between the two is definitely the highlight of the film. The story follows the two's journey to Changsha, showcasing all of the misfortune they encounter on the way (which is also where the comedy is derived from). The plot is sappy and corny but in an entertaining way. The film explores Chinese society, such as the gap between the wealthy and the common, albeit in a superficial manner. I do like how this film takes place in the backdrop of Chunyun, a very Chinese phenomenon.

Conclusion

A Chinese holiday film.
