The story takes place through the lens of an interview with Chiyoko Fujiwara (Miyoko Shōji), an aged former actress who has a career spanning many decades. The film progresses through Chiyoko's life, blending reality and fantasy.

The trompe l’oeil technique blurring reality and fantasy is definitely very risky, because if it's poorly executed, then the audience can be lost. Fortunately, this film executes it very expertly. Chiyoko's life is entwined with that of her films and the transitions between the two are smooth and effortless. This film is definitely a cerebral one but it rewards attention with a rich multi-layered story following strong emotional themes. I also really enjoyed how the film portrays Japanese cinema throughout the 20th century.
