Review

Hugh Grant plays William Thacker, the owner of a bookstore selling travel guides in Notting Hill, London. One day, the famous Hollywood actress Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) enters Thacker’s store and the two share an instant connection.

Grant’s William is charming and has great chemistry with Roberts’ Anna. The film feels distinctly British, both in its locale but also in its bantering dialogue. Some of my favourite scenes are those involving William, his friends, and his family around the dinner table. The supporting cast which includes Tim McInnerny's Max, Gina McKee's Bella, and Rhys Ifans' Spike, are all great and contribute much to the story. The dynamic of a romance between the average joe and a wealthy partner is archetypical but the film puts its own spin. The plot is also very corny but very warm.

Conclusion

A warm and British romcom.
