What the fuck is that?

Review

This was the last movie I saw on my flight to SF from Asia. I actually first heard of this film through Facebook ads and seeing news articles of their guerilla marketing at the LA Clippers game. The story follows Nate (Jack Quaid), an assistant manager at a credit union who suffers from CIPA, in inability to feel physical pain. When the bank branch he's working at gets robbed and his love interest Sherry (Amber Midthunder) is kidnapped, Nate abandons all caution to track her down.

Quaid nails the mild-mannered and socially awkward Nate and his character development arc really resembled that of Hughie in The Boys. The story is very simple and straightforward, and I suspect the plot is written to showcase the main selling point of the film, which is the devastating and over-the-top violence. Due to Nate's condition, the action sequences are constantly gruesome and macabre. It's entertaining and shocking at the beginning but it does get a tad tiring near the end, especially coupled with the weak plot.

Conclusion

A macabre action film.
