Haven't you heard, Mr. Becket? The world is coming to an end. So where would you rather die? Here? Or in a Jaeger?

Review

I first watched this when it came out in the theatres and I believe it’s a hidden gem of a film. In the world of Pacific Rim, large monsters named Kaijus start appearing from the depth of oceans and large robots called Jaegers are created to fight the monsters. The story follows Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam), a veteran Jaeger pilot recovering from the loss of his partner, and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), an untested trainee, as they pilot a Jaeger in humanity’s last defense against the Kaijus.

The story is basic and feels like Gundam meets Godzilla. While largely one-dimensional, the characters are interesting, such as Idris Elba’s protective Marshal Pentecost and Ron Perlman’s ridiculous Hannibal Chau. The highlights are by far the action sequences. The Jaegers look amazing and have very interesting designs, the Kaijus don’t look as cool but still have a sense of menace. The city settings feature bright neon lights and serve as an excellent backdrop for the battles between Kaijus and Jaegers.

Conclusion

The scenes with mechas are worth the price of admission.
