Down by the docks. Rough part of town, not the sorta place you wanna visit alone at night.

Well, I'm actually pretty good at being alone at night.

Review

In the Pokémon universe, a young man (Justice Smith) comes across a talking Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) who seeks to be a detective. The two set off to solve the mystery surrounding a mysterious gas that causes Pokémon to enter into a frenzy.

The main draw for me is the CGI Pokémon, and this film delivers. The designs of the Pokémon are realistic but still remain true to the original animation and video games. The acting is flat all around the board with Smith’s main character not being very relatable nor very likeable, as he is largely emotionless. Reynolds’ Pikachu is very charismatic and makes for a good foil though. The other characters, such as Kathryn Newton’s Lucy and Ken Watanabe’s Detective Yoshida, are largely unmemorable.

The humour is pretty decent and the movie does seem reminiscent of the earlier Pokémon cartoons. There is also a fair amount of fan service.

Conclusion

Not the greatest movie but it is entertaining at certain parts.
