I think you are a very bright, very special woman.

Review

In Los Angeles, Edward Lewis (Richard Gere), a genteel corporate raider, stumbles upon Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), a free-spirited prostitute. The two quickly develop a chemistry and bond.

The story is perhaps one of the most far-fetched I’ve seen, but as an escapist fantasy for certain viewers, it does have its charming moments. Gere and Roberts are both very attractive and have great chemistry together. The supporting cast, such as Jason Alexander’s Stuckey, Héctor Elizondo’s Barney, and Laura San Giacomo’s Kit, are archetypical but fun foils for Gere and Roberts. There are some interesting themes, such as class divisions, but the film prefers to develop more superficial motifs such as the glamour of wealth. The film almost feels like a postmodernist version of the Cinderella story. I did like the music score, though.

Conclusion

A superficial romcom with great performances.
