Hugh Jackman plays Charlie, a former boxer turned deadbeat dad who participates in robot boxing to make a living. After a string of bad luck which includes his latest robot Ambush getting destroyed and his ex-girlfriend dying, Charlie must not only try to repay his debts through robot boxing but also take care of his estranged eleven year old son Max (Dakota Goyo).
I actually watched this film when it first came out in theatres and back then I found the story corny but the film entertaining. Rewatching the film today, I still feel the same. The plot is a generic one of sports underdogs overcoming obstacles to win and the characters are all one-dimensional archetypes. The script also lacks any nuance. Despite this, watching cool robots fighting will never be not entertaining. I honestly think robot fighting should be brought back to the mainstream, especially in the soon-to-be golden age of AI.
An entertaining robot fighting movie.
