I just don’t know if I’m what they’re looking for.
This film tells the story of Elton John, one of the most legendary musicians to come out of Britain in the past century. The film, starring Taron Egerton as Elton, shows Elton’s life through different time periods, from his time as a shy, awkward, and introverted boy to him embracing who he is and becoming a global superstar.
Egerton’s Elton is the star of the film; Egerton perfectly captures the flair and flamboyance of Elton. My favourite aspect of his performance is his minute facial expressions which subtly conveys Elton’s state of mind. The supporting cast, which features Bryce Dallas Howard’s cold and domineering Sheila and Richard Madden’s manipulative John Reid, both serve to enhance Egerton’s Elton. My favourite supporting character has to be Jamie Bell’s Bernie Taupin, Elton’s loyal and accepting musical partner.
This film, unlike Bohemian Rhapsody, is a full-on musical featuring some of Elton John’s most iconic works. While the film lacks the nuance and sharp cinematography of Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman feels much more cathartic as it focuses on the melodramatic journey of ups and downs leading to Elton finally accepting who he is.
While lacking the nuance of Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman is still an excellent character study of one of Britain's most legendary rockstars.
