This is the LAPD. We're the most hated cops in all the free world. My own mama's ashamed of me. She tells everybody I'm a drug dealer.

Review

This was one of the first English movies I’ve seen; I still remember popping in the VHS tape and rewinding at my mother’s house. In this buddy cop comedy, the Hong Kong Detective Lee (Jackie Chan) teams up with LAPD Detective Carter (Chris Tucker) to solve a case involving the kidnapping of the Chinese Consul’s daughter.

The story is as conventional as action detective stories get and the script is also very superficial. Despite this, this film still oozes with charm from the two protagonists. Chan’s quiet and stoic Lee and Carter’s loud and extravagant Tucker are perfect foils for one another. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the two character’s chemistry develop throughout the film. The humour in this film is hilarious; there are many jokes pertaining to race and they’re done in such a way that’s playful and non-malicious. I think this film serves as a good example of how inter-race relations should be: recognizing and accepting the differences between different cultures.

Conclusion

A generic story carried by two characters with great chemistry and witty banter.
