Say hello to my little friend!
Previous De Palma review:
In this remake of the 1932 film of the same name, newly ex-convict Cuban refugee Tony Montana (Al Pacino) seeks to follow the American Dream by climbing the ladders of the Miami criminal underworld.
Pacino’s non-subtle and ferocious Tony makes for such an interesting and engaging character. His character arc is so simple but so expertly executed. Despite Tony being a villain I couldn't help but cheer for him because of his brash underdog bravado. The supporting cast, which includes Steven Bauer’s relaxed Manny, Michelle Pfeiffer’s drug-addicted Elvira, and Paul Shenar’s drug lord Sosa, were very memorable as well. My favourite scenes are the interactions between Montana and the people surrounding him, such as his sister Gina (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). Both the costumes and sets are gaudy but very intentionally so. The soundtrack by the legendary Giorgio Moroder is awesome.
An iconic 80s movie and one of the greatest gangster films ever made.
