Ernest Hemingway once wrote, "The world is a fine place and worth fighting for." I agree with the second part.

Review

In this grim and disturbing detective thriller, retiring police detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) partners with the young, idealistic detective Mills (Brad Pitt) who recently transferred to the city. The two investigate a series of grisly murders inspired by the seven deadly sins.

Freeman’s calm Somerset is a perfect foil for Pitt’s brash Mills. The chemistry between the two grows as their characters develop. Both the performances were brilliant, and the supporting cast which includes Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tracy and Kevin Spacey’s John Doe were amazing as well. The film is cerebral but very dark, with poorly lit cinematography and macabre shots of the victims. The story is an excellent build up with plenty of foreshadowing and exciting ending. The script is very tight and allows both Freeman and Pitt to showcase their ranges as actors.

Conclusion

A dark thriller with great acting.
