Review

Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) accosts John Watson (Jude Law) on Watson’s honeymoon to Brighton in order to take on the vast criminal network of the cunning Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). Holmes and Watson uncover a conspiracy on a global level.

While the story isn’t one from the Sherlock Holmes books, it does build upon many of the Holmesian themes and plotpoints. I really enjoyed the buddy cop banter between Holmes and Watson which carried over from the first film and the fast-paced plot which felt like an exciting chess match between Holmes and Moriarty. The slick editing of many of the action sequences makes this film feel much more like a blockbuster action film than a cerebral detective mystery. The supporting cast, which includes Noomi Rapace’s Madame Simza, Kelly Reilly’s Mary, Stephen Fry’s Mycroft, and Rachel McAdams’ Irene Adler, played their roles but didn’t really stand out.

Conclusion

An action-packed Sherlock film that loses some of its cerebral edge.
