Review

Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are two U.S. Marshals who arrive at Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island. The two are tasked with investigating the disappearance of a patient named Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer). The two quickly uncover a much deeper and darker conspiracy.

The story, based on the novel Dennis Lehane, is very original. I really enjoyed the gaslighting games the film plays with the audience, where the audience must decide what’s reality. DiCaprio was brilliant and really amped up the pressure and suspense with his acting. The supporting cast, which includes Ruffalo’s Aule and Ben Kingsley’s Cawley, help facilitate DiCaprio’s character. The dark and dreary neo-noir atmosphere and setting are both very fitting to the story. Personally, I didn’t like how the film shows what is reality at the end, but maybe that’s just one more game played with the audience.

Conclusion

A well-executed mystery thriller with an original story.
