Review

Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) is an FBI agent who joins a task force trying to apprehend a lieutenant (Bernardo Saracino) of a Mexican cartel. Fellow task force members include Matt Graver (Josh Brolin), a veteran CIA operative, and Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro) a former Mexican lawyer turned mercenary. Kate quickly realizes there is more to the task force’s mission than she’s led on.

The story gets darker as the film progresses and fully showcases the brutality of cartel warfare. The cinematography and sound design are both surprisingly artistic for an action film. The film does suspense and tension very well. Blunt plays an excellent Macer who gradually becomes disillusioned with her role within the group, and various supporting characters, such as Daniel Kaluuya’s Reggie and Jon Bernthal’s Ted play their roles well. The highlight performance for me is del Toro’s Alejandro who is cold and ruthless and is hiding a dark past.

Conclusion

A dark thriller about criminal cartels where the cartels aren't necessarily the most brutal groups.
