I don't want to die. And your men don't want to die, and these people certainly don't wan to to die. It's a shame you're in such a hurry to.

Review

Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader), an Egyptologist and linguist is tasked with translating the hieroglyphics on an ancient artifact recovered in Egypt. The device happens to be a gate across the galaxy and Jackson, accompanied by a team of soldiers led by Colonel O’Neil (Kurt Russell) enter the gate together to find out more about what’s on the other side.

The premise of the story is very interesting. It plays on the many conspiracy theories linking ancient civilizations with extraterrestrials which may have visited Earth. The actual plot line started out very interesting but quickly fell into tropes. There was a fair amount of romance and humour intertwined with the action. Spader as an aloof Jackson and Russell as a serious O’Neil work as foils for one another. The supporting cast, which included the androgynous Jaye Davidson and the comedic Skaar, were also very fun to watch. The costume and set design were also exotic and contributed much to the film.

Conclusion

An original premise for a space film.
