I'm no good with machines.
The movie is based on the novel A Very Private Gentleman by Martin Booth; typically I like to read the book before watching the film, but finding myself finished everything I needed to do on a Friday evening, I decided to give the film a shot.
I really enjoy thrillers and suspense movies, and this one seemed promising. Jack (played by George Clooney) is a ruthless gunsmith assassin who's looking to retire. The first 10 minutes of the movie was awesome; Jack was cold, but after the first couple of minutes, the movie turned into a romantic drama.
The movie felt very European, both in setting and in cinematography. The film features beautiful shots of the Italian countryside and takes its time to slowly build up atmosphere in each scene. There's almost an arthouse vibe with the religious symbolism juxtaposed with the (uncomfortably) long full-nudity sex scenes. I felt that thematic topic of morality and religion should have been developed further.
I felt that the plot was very predictable; with its laconic protagonist in a merciless trade, it was pretty obvious where everything was leading towards. I did enjoy, however, Jack's character development; George Clooney was one of the highlights of the film.
The movie felt like a Trojan horse, promising action and suspense but delivering a romantic drama. It's not a bad movie, per se, but certainly not the fast-paced action movie that was promised.
