Review

Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is an aspiring journalism graduate who manages to land a job as the assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the editor-in-chief of Runway, a glamorous fashion magazine based in New York City. Andy tries to fit in amongst the fashion and media elite while dealing with the irrational demands of Miranda.

The character development of Hathaway’s Andy is definitely the highlight of the film. Andy slowly assimilates to her environment both visually and also in her mannerisms. Streep’s cold and sarcastic Miranda also makes for an excellent foil for Andy. From the supporting cast, my favourite is probably Stanley Tucci’s Nigel who develops into a likeable confidante to Andy. Emily Blunt’s comedic Emily and Simon Baker’s seductive Christian are also solid. Overall, while this movie isn’t my cup of tea, I appreciate the (sometimes) good writing and excellent performances from Hathaway and Streep.

Conclusion

Interesting film exploring the negative culture of the fashion industry.
