No matter what you've done, you deserve respect. Even if you make mistakes, you're loveable. And it doesn't matter your looks, skills, age, size or anything. You're worthwhile, no one can ever take that away from you.
The documentary tells the story of Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker, real name Caleb Lawrence McGillvary. Kai became a viral sensation in 2013 for stopping a man’s rampage by hitting the man with a hatchet. Kai is branded as a hero and his charisma and carefree demeanor won many people over, including Jimmy Kimmel, who invited Kai on his show. The documentary dives deep into Kai’s story and paints a more nuanced picture of the man behind the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker persona.
The documentary relies on interviews of people who are involved in Kai’s story, such as Jessob Reisbeck, the news anchor who first interviewed Kai at the scene and Lisa Samsky, a reality tv agent. The picture illustrates the power of the internet in causing Kai’s meteoric rise in popularity, and the opportunities which were available to him due to said popularity. The story quickly takes a darker turn as the interviews uncover the real Kai underneath his cheerful facade, such as his mental health problems and alcoholism. If anything this documentary is a cautionary tale about a man who obtained internet fame and attracted people who are more concerned about their individual self interests instead of helping the man with his very evident issues. Even this documentary can be argued to be another party exploiting Kai's story.
A interesting story with many twists and turns.
