My job is to keep you out of harm's way.
Shit, motherfucker. I am harm's way.
Ryan Reynolds plays Michael Bryce, a former AAA-rated bodyguard who has fallen on hard times due to a customer under his protection getting assassinated. Meanwhile, Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman), the Belarussian dictator, is under trial at the Hague for war crimes, with the notorious hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) being the key witness. Bryce is tasked with escorting Kincaid to the Hague for Kincaid’s testimony against Dukhovich.
This film uses many classic buddy cop action film tropes but does so tastefully; Reynolds’ collected and professional Bryce foils really well with Jackson’s chaotic and brash Kincaid. The two also have great buddy cop chemistry with great banter. The supporting cast, which includes the unmemorable Roussel (Élodie Yung) and the very memorable Sonia (Salma Hayek) were decent as well. Overall it’s a fun and clichéd film that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
A fun and light action comedy with some great banter.
