Review

The story continues to follow Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and his group as they continue to adventure towards the Lonely Mountain. Much of the story is not directly from The Hobbit book but much of the new story additions made sense with the broader Middle-earth lore, such as the multiple scenes involving Gandalf and the Necromancer. Furthermore, the new characters added to The Hobbit story, ranging from brand new Middle-earth characters such as Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly) to old The Lord of the Rings characters such as Legolas (Orlando Bloom) also made sense and did not feel like filler.

As before, Martin Freeman’s Bilbo, Armitage’s Thorin, and Ian McKellen’s Gandalf were wonderful. My favourite performance was perhaps Benedict Cumberbatch as a CGI Smaug. His voice acting was brilliant and his body movement was surprisingly good for the dragon. Overall this film felt much faster-paced than its predecessor and had more exciting story plots.

Conclusion

A solid follow up to the first film.
