Neo (Keanu Reeves), Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) continue to lead the fight against the Machines. This time the plot dives deeper into the lore of the dystopian world, such as exploring Zion, the last bastion of humanity, and the various rogue programs who have broken free from the Machines’ control.

The main plot feels more straightforward compared to the first film but at the same time the story feels more divergent due to the plethora of side characters being introduced. Many of them are pretty cool, such as Seraph (Collin Chou), the bodyguard of the Oracle (Gloria Foster), and the Twins (Neil and Adrian Rayment), a pair of rogue programs. The side characters, however, mostly don’t contribute too much to the story and their characters aren’t very flushed out. The second film also feels like it takes itself more seriously compared to the first, and oftentimes the dialogue feels overly philosophical and dramatic, which can get tiring. The actual philosophy behind the film is pretty interesting, though.

The cinematography and style are both very similar to the first film, which is very good. The action sequences are still solid but this film is more reliant on special effects and as a result did not age as well.

Conclusion

A bit less magical than the first film.
